Rosas & Ictus
November 23, 2013 at Palais Des Festivals And Congress

Between Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Steve Reich and the group Ictus, its a story of love and connections. A formal and spiritual connection as strong as it is invisible, woven by the choreography in Drumming in 1998, then in Rain in 2001. In synchronised rhythm with someone who defines his works as a "phase music", the Rosas dancers embrace the musical convolutions down to their subtlest respirations, offering up a breath-taking performance. Without a cut or a break, the repetitive flow of the dance sprawls out like a long trail of powder, from body to body, from trails in the air to races on the ground. With chronometric precision and insolent endurance! The dance score is unbelievably sophisticated, mirroring in its complexity, the simplicity of Steve Reich's work: the twelve dancers clasp his tempos, his bursts of speed and decelerations, sculpting the "fluorescent orange as if they were embers" alternating the softness of the links and the fluidity of the circuits. Until intoxication and vertigo take over. The obsessive beating of the drums (bongos, marimbas and glockenspiels) has never been more visual or embodied. One might believe that the dancers have shaken off their earthy envelope to become nothing but skin, wood and metal... a disembodied abstraction but not inhuman, which makes the Ghanaian music that inspired the composer resonate within them: waves, bursts, fractions, broken lines, rising up in the light, like flames in the African night.
